Mental health disorders include a wider range of problems, with different symptoms. However, they are basically distinguished by some combination of abnormal thoughts, emotion, behavior and relationship with others. Examples are schizophrenia, depression, mental retardation and disorder due substance use such as Khat use. Decades of Somali civil war have affected the mental and psychosocial wellbeing of Somali people. The World Health organization (WHO) estimated that one in three Somalis have been impacted by some kind of mental health illness, a prevalence which is significantly higher than any other countries. Therefore, the department of mental health and psychosocial support is a center for excellence envisioned to transform the understating and treatment of mental illness through informative, basic and clinical research, innovating the way for prevention, recovery and cure.
